The organization profiles are up!

Organizations are In Character groups that aren’t otherwise represented by a guild. In the set up we have now, it’s one username to any amount of organizations. Rosters and editing permissions like those that exist for the guilds will soon be implemented, so hold on to your hats, mons!

And a sneak peek! We’re always coming up with ideas, sometimes too fast for our little coding fingers to hammer them all out. New features for the organizations as per our to do list follows:
Customizable Application Process
Protected Forums
Organization-specific Calendar
Inset à la Google Maps style for Headquarters location
Custom Logo

And that’s only for the organizations. A coder’s work is never done!

——————–

Today’s Food’s question is:

What personality type is your character, according to the MBTI?

This question is a little more complicated than my usual ones, as MBTI is a complicated personality theory in itself. If you want to skip the theory and just find your character’s (or your own) MBTI type, this is nifty linky to an unofficial test: http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp This one has links to type descriptions at the end, although these can also be found all over the internet. I’ve put more nifty links at the bottom of this post, as well.

Please note: the tests are 70% accurate at best. If you were taking the real MBTI, you’d sit down with the test-giver after to verify the result as your true best fit type. Since this is just for fun, I think we can skip that part.

The MBTI is short for the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. It’s based on a series of personality theories first developed by Carl Jung in 1921, and later expanded on by Katharine Cooks Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers during the second World War. Other personality theories like Keirsey temperaments and Socionics use similar terminology as the MBTI, but shouldn’t be confused for each other. Most personality theories touch on the same basic traits, but go about organizing them in different ways. Here’s the pattern for MBTI:

There are 16 personality types, represented by a combination of four letters: E/I, for Extroversion and Introversion. N/S, for iNtuition and Sensing. F/T, for Feeling and Thinking. J/P, for Judging and Perceiving. For example, if you were an Extrovert, an iNtuitive, a Thinker, and Judge-er, your MBTI would ENTJ.

The labels for the 8 traits can be a little misleading, so here’s a quick description of each. We all have traits that fit into either dichotomy, and MBTI is based on which extreme you gravitate towards MOST OFTEN. None of these traits are better than the other, though they do have different strengths.

The E-I Scale:
Extroversion: You get your energy by interacting with the outside world (in the truest MBTI meaning of the word, this does NOT correlate with whether you enjoy being around people or not, or how good your people skills are). You process your thoughts externally, by bouncing ideas off of others, or going out and testing your theories by action. Being alone for too long is draining.

Introversion: You get your energy by interacting with your personal inner world. You process your thoughts internally, with a cognitive framework that makes sense only for you. Being around others for too long is draining.

The N-S Scale:
Intuition: You are a forward thinker, intrigued by possibilities and theories. You are good with seeing the overall picture, but not so good at handling the details of here and now.

Sensing: You spend most of your time in the present. If you can’t see it, touch it, smell it, taste it, or hear it, it’s not of big importance to you. You are good with details and living in the present, less good at seeing the big picture or projecting your ideas out into the future.

The T-F Scale:
Thinking: Being a thinker doesn’t necessarily mean you are logical! You tend to process things in a detached manner, seeking objectivity, productivity, and facts before you consider the more humanitarian sides of things.

Feeling: Being a feeler doesn’t necessarily mean you are emotional! You tend to process things in an attached manner, associating the topic back with how it affects people, society, and aesthetics.

The J-P Scale:
Judging: Being a judge-er doesn’t mean you are “judgmental”. Rather, you always have a plan, and this manifests itself in how you organize your daily life. You may like enacting change, but adapting to outside changes can be difficult and time-consuming for you.

Perceiving: You prefer to take things as they come, and prefer an environment that’s flexible to one that’s rule-bound. Change is easy for you to adapt to.

For more type descriptions and information:
http://typelogic.com/

Studying MBTI is something of a personal hobby for me, as well. So if you have questions, I’d be happy to answer them!

Today’s Food’s question is:

How do you make use of ingame mechanics in RP?

Among other things: do you consider levels, attributes, or class a good way of determining character strengths? How do you handle deaths, whether gained from PvP combat or misadventures in raids or questing? What are your thoughts on RPing as a race that’s not one of the player races?

Guild Blogs, Bugfixes, and More in our Version 1.1 release!

A couple of weeks ago we decided to stop rolling new features out ad-hoc and instead test everything over on our beta site to release in stages instead.

The result of this stage is our version 1.1 release. Mostly a collection tweaks and bugfixes (a couple of which we thought important enough to roll to live before the release itself), but more notably this release enables guild blogs for all guild leaders (previously only available for beta testers), as well as a management UI allowing guild leaders to give blog permissions to others.

To create and manage a guild blog, you must either be the guild leader on battle.net, or have “manage” permissions for the guild assigned to you through the guild’s dotOrg page. The link to create the blog is on your guild page itself.

Oh, and guild leaders (plus anyone else with manage rights) can now set rank names through the guild page!

You can check out the other changes in 1.1 here.

All about profiles and the commenting system!

First off, I wanted to give some credit where it is due. The IC commenting system we use here was designed by an RP crew over at the Raven Mythic, which is an RPer community site for the game Everquest II, Antonia Bayle server.

Huzzah, RM! Should you ever find yourself heading in that direction, here’s a nifty linky: http://www.raven-mythic.com/phpbb3/index.php (I’ve also heard their text-based RPG Thelus is pretty swell, if you’re looking for a non-MMO RP fix with other awesome folk.)

Second thing I’d like to discuss is the nature of the commenting, as well as the profiles here. What I’m writing is only how the system was intended, as well as how it was handled at the Raven Mythic. Whether this is the best way to do it is still up for debate.

In short, the profiles are for OOC entertainment and curiosity. Taking information from them and using it in IC interactions would be akin to meta-gaming.

There are a lot of spaces to fill in on the profiles, and you can use as many or as few of them as you like. If you look into the profiles on the Raven Mythic, ours are comparatively small. Perhaps TOO small! We’re always taking suggestions about how to better the site, and should you think the profiles need another feature, please let us know.

On the other side of things, the comments themselves are IC, but what I’d call limited IC. No OOC comments, or comments inspired by OOC interactions, should be made on the profiles. Also, unless otherwise stated by the commentator, they are assumed to be made to an anonymous third party who never shares what they learned. In this way, taking information from the comments would also be considered meta-gaming. Responding to the comments ICly wouldn’t technically be possible, either. The comments aren’t intended to be conversations (use a post on the forums or ingame dialogue for that!), but a critique as your character would make it.

Commenting back is another issue I’d like to touch on. It’s good to return comments, by which I mean, commenting on a character who took the time to comment on you. It helps foster community ties and gives people feedback on whether or not their character is coming across as intended. It’s good form to deliver a comment roughly as big as the one made on your own profile. If someone gave you a paragraph, aim for a paragraph in return. If someone gave you only a line, you’re only responsible for a single line back (although there’s nothing stopping you from writing more if you wish to!)

The reason for this system’s design is so that players posting do not feel any need to hide delicate information in worries someone might use it against them ICly. It also keeps arguing over what a person is really like out of the comments. These things are opinions. Some characters are manipulative beesterds who are duping half the server about their true nature. Others are just beesterds period and having to defend themselves against comments would get tiresome pretty quick.

That said, if a comment made is so out of line you suspect griefing, you can petition to a site administer and we will remove it. This goes for any representation of your character in the blogs, story archive, or forums that you don’t like as well. Please use this power of yours sparingly: opinions are worth two coppers, and little is served by trying to correct all of them, especially when they’re made in an IC manner for good RP fun.

So here’s our latest crazy little feature:

Embed your guild profile onto your own site using the following Javascript:

<script src="http://cenarioncircle.org/scripts/embed/guild.js?your-guild-name"></script>

Obviously, replace your-guild-name with the name of your guild. If you have trouble with guilds with a space in their name, try using %20 instead of a space.

At the moment this just gives you a roster page, but we’ll be adding in more features soon (including one of these to embed your character profiles on your own personal sites, and one for calendar events)

And a big thanks to Genevra of Conclave for helping us test this out!

We’ve been working hard to stomp out the remaining bugs that have been identified.

Most notable amongst these was the glitch that was causing recurring calendar events to show up a day late. Unfortunately this was down to the commercial forum software we’re using, and we had to rely on an upgrade to fix it. After the upgrade this now seems to be working properly.

One that was down to us was non-ASCII letters in character names not working in a number of places (most notably being able to switch characters, find their profile page, check guild permissions, and see their achievements). This should now be working fine.
